Why there's no standalone AI add-on anymore

If you remember paying $10/member to bolt Notion AI onto any plan, that option is gone. Since August 2025, Notion retired the standalone AI add-on for Free and Plus and moved full AI into Business and Enterprise exclusively.

Custom Agent credits explained

Here's the newest wrinkle. Since May 2026, Notion's Custom Agents run on a metered credit system: $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits, with no rollover, charged on top of your Business or Enterprise seats.

Not all AI is metered, though. Standard AI Agents and Ask Notion stay included in your Business seat at no extra charge. The credit meter only kicks in when you build and run Custom Agents — the tailored, workflow-style automations that do multi-step work across your workspace.

The practical risk is predictability. A light user may never touch a credit; a team leaning hard on Custom Agents for recurring automation can see this become a real usage-based line item that varies month to month. Because credits don't roll over, buying ahead doesn't bank anything — you're sizing to peak monthly use. Budget for it separately from your seat count.

Annual vs monthly & per-seat math

Two things drive your final bill beyond the headline price: the billing cycle and the number of members. Both are easy to overlook.

Annual billing is cheaper. Plus is $10/member/month on annual versus about $12 if you pay monthly, and Business is $20 annual versus roughly $24 monthly. Over a year that gap adds up across every seat.

And these plans are per member, so cost scales directly with team size. A 10-person team on Business is $200/month annual, not $20. Adding a member mid-cycle is pro-rated, so you're not double-charged, but every seat you add multiplies the base price. Is Notion AI worth it?
