Everything runs on priority credits, and the one rule that trips people up is expiry: subscription credits vanish at the end of each cycle, but purchased top-ups roll over. Ideogram has a free tier plus three paid personal plans. Annual billing knocks a meaningful amount off Plus and Pro.

At annual billing, Plus works out to about $180/year ($15/mo) and Pro to about $504/year ($42/mo). There are also Team plans for organizations that need shared seats and centralized billing.

How credits work

A credit isn't one image — it's a unit of generation cost, and how many final images you get depends on the model and rendering mode you choose. On Plus's 1,000 monthly credits, that's roughly 250–667 finished images; on Pro's 3,500, roughly 1,167–2,333. Higher-quality modes cost more credits per image, so your real output varies with how you work.

There are two speeds: priority credits (fast, what the plans are measured in) and slow generation. Plus and Pro include unlimited slow generation, so once your priority credits run low you can keep working at a lower speed rather than stopping — a genuinely useful safety valve that Basic and Free lack.

The free tier

Free gives you about 10 slow credits a week, resetting weekly. The catches are significant: all generations are public and visible to the community, downloads are JPG only, you get one concurrent generation, and you're limited to Default rendering mode. It's fine for trying the model, but not for client work — private generation alone requires Plus.

Basic, Plus & Pro

Basic ($8/mo) is the entry point: 400 priority credits and priority generation. It suits light, occasional use. Plus ($20/mo, $15 annual) is the sweet spot for most designers — 1,000 credits, unlimited slow generation, and private images, which is the plan you actually want for real work. Pro ($60/mo, $42 annual) adds 3,500 credits and the big differentiator, batch generation via CSV upload, for teams producing many campaign variants at once.

Top-ups & the expiry trap

This is the part to get right. Your monthly subscription credits expire at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover — unused ones are gone. But top-up credits, bought separately at $4 for 250, do carry over month to month, as long as you keep an active paid subscription. Top-ups are also only drawn down after your subscription credits run out, so they act as a durable reserve. The practical move: lean on your monthly allotment first, and buy top-ups only when you'll genuinely exceed it.

Is Ideogram worth it?

Yes, if you do design work with text — logos, posters, packaging, ads, social graphics. At $8–$20/month it's cheaper than most rivals and unmatched at rendering legible type, with native 2K output and alpha channels on top. For pure photorealism it's the wrong tool, and the free tier is too restrictive for anything private.
